Red Joe’s was the main painting in a group of three pictures of Butterbone Stud Park, west of Warren in New South Wales. The lady who commissioned the paintings always said of any painting that I did of red dirt country, “Oh, it reminds me of Butterbone Stud Park”. However, when I visited the property to sketch for the commissions, Red Joe’s was the only red dirt paddock on the place. However, I have spent many, many nights in a swag in red dirt country and it is the essence of Australia. Sketching this painting, in the morning, when the shadows were long and the air still cool, with the soft colours and the animals still active before they sought shade for the heat of the day was a delight. I sought to capture that mood, the deep lungs-full of clean air and the subtle contrasts of the early morning.

What is a giclee print?

The picture has been printed using a giclée process with Epson pigment inks on Breathing Color Lyve Canvas: an archival certified, premium, heavy (450gsm) matte canvas. The print has also been finished with a Hahnemühle protective coating, which seals the surface and protects it from dust and fingerprints, increases moisture resistance and helps to protect from fading caused by UV rays. Tests show that this combination of materials produces long life prints, but as with all prints, exposure to direct sunlight may eventually affect the print.
