Crooked Creek was one of three paintings of Butterbone Stud Park, west of the Macquarie Marshes in New South Wales, that was commissioned by one of its previous owners. When she asked me to do the paintings, I visited the property and drove around much of it with her, endeavouring to identify the places that had particularly favourable memories for her. This place was one of the more important, as it was a place where she used to go camping with her father when she was young.
The painting was both challenging and rewarding for me as an artist. The water, with its contrasting reflections and shadows, was unusually difficult, but the light on the tantalising distance beyond was more rewarding.
Having been a sheep-breeder for over forty years, the young rams coming down to drink were difficult for me to get right. Because of the environment in which they were bred, they are very different to the style of sheep for which I used to select. As a compensation, the rush of wings of the Black Duck arriving added movement and life, drawing the viewer's eye back down into the picture.
The other two paintings selected for the group of three were Weeping Myall and Red Joe's, showing the variety of landscapes on this beautiful property.

What is a Giclee Print?
The picture has been printed using a giclée process with Epson pigment inks on Breathing Color Lyve Canvas: an archival certified, premium, heavy (450gsm) matte canvas. The print has also been finished with a Hahnemühle protective coating, which seals the surface and protects it from dust and fingerprints, increases moisture resistance and helps to protect from fading caused by UV rays. Tests show that this combination of materials produces long life prints, but as with all prints, exposure to direct sunlight may eventually affect the print.
